Marc Gwamaka
Chief of Staff Aegis Trust & Kigali Genocide Memorial
As a teenager, he dedicated his life to breaking the cycles of hatred. He founded the Peace and
Love Proclaimer (PLP), a youth movement that mobilizes young people to build humane paths.
Additionally, he established the Walk to Remember, an educational program that educates young
people worldwide about the history of Rwanda, including the genocide, its aftermath, and
strategies to prevent its recurrence. In 2008, under Marc’s leadership, PLP developed
“Forgiveness as a Step to Reconciliation,” which was the first public campaign on forgiveness in
Rwanda. This campaign brought together perpetrators, survivors, and their children to discuss
the most challenging topic of forgiveness.
Marc founded the Aegis Youth Champion Leadership Program in 2013. Through this program,
he has trained and mentored over 2,300 individuals, including those involved in active conflict.
These individuals have been empowered to become role models and powerful advocates for
humanity in their communities. Marc has utilized Rwanda’s history to design and lead programs
in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Nigeria. As a prominent voice of humanity,
Marc has conducted training sessions in various countries, including Austria, South Africa,
Zambia, the USA, Gambia, Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, and his native Rwanda.
Marc, a Salzburg Global Fellow, currently serves as the chief of staff at the Isoko Center for
Humanity/Aegis Trust and the Kigali Genocide Memorial. He is an accomplished facilitator who
imparts valuable knowledge on peace and values education to a diverse audience, including local
and international communities. Marc has been a frequent trainer with the Nigerian Magistrates
and Judges and has had the privilege of being a guest lecturer at prestigious institutions such as
the European Security and Defence College, Harvard Law School, Tufts University, William and
Mary, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and Coventry University, among others. In
2023, the city of Coventry, in the United Kingdom, honored Marc by inviting him to deliver the
prestigious Lord Mayor’s Peace Lecture.
