Sideya Sherman

NYC Chief Equity Officer & Commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice

Sideya Sherman is the NYC Chief Equity Officer & Commissioner of the new NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice, where she leads the city’s effort to advance equity through policy, practice, and programs that serve New Yorkers. Sherman brings nearly two decades of equity-focused community and economic development experience, most recently serving as commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity (MOE), Executive Director of the city’s NYC Taskforce on Racial Inclusion & Equity (TRIE), and Executive Vice President for Community Engagement and Partnerships at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). 

Before her career in government, Sherman worked in the nonprofit sector, gaining significant equity-focused community and economic development experience at both a local and national scale. Sherman is a lifelong New Yorker. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Utica College and a Master of Science degree in urban affairs from Hunter College.
