Thanos Bourtsalas, Ph.D.

Lecturer, Sustainability Science; Lecturer in the Discipline of Sustainable Development and Circular Economy, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science

Dr. Thanos Bourtsalas serves as the Acting Director at the Earth Engineering Center and as a Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Engineering, focusing on sustainable waste management, the circular economy, and urban metabolism. Recognized by the UN, the IFC/World Bank, and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore, Dr. Bourtsalas specializes in system-level technoeconomic and life cycle assessment, blending both analytical and experimental approaches. His work evaluates the intersections between system capabilities, economics, environment, and regulations to develop sustainable solutions.

Dr. Bourtsalas has authored over forty peer-reviewed papers and actively collaborates internationally. His work includes conducting due diligence for emerging technologies and advising on investment strategies, with significant involvement in global initiatives across China, India, Indonesia, Chile, Colombia, and several EU nations.

Dr. Bourtsalas received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, and his M.Sc. from the Earth & Environmental Engineering Department of Columbia University. He completed his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London.
