Part-Time Lecturer of Finance; Senior Vice President and Global Head of Tax, Assurant

Melissa Hall is an accomplished board member, seasoned finance executive and Qualified Financial Expert (QFE) with an extraordinary ability to drive complex strategies while managing risk at the highest levels. She has $250 million of direct P&L responsibility and over 35 years of experience across Fortune 300 financial services companies and a Big Four accounting firm.

As a Senior Vice President in Finance and Global Head of Tax at Assurant, Melissa oversees operational finance projects and global tax strategy, compliance and risk management across North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. A trusted member of Assurant’s Leadership Team, Melissa has a key role in risk management, capital management, M&A and strategic decision-making.

Previously Melissa served as VP, Tax and Financial Ratings at Fortis, the predecessor of Assurant. She played a pivotal role in the company’s IPO readiness, partnering with treasury to restructure the balance sheet, unwind tiers of inter-company debt and issue senior debt. For the $1.76B IPO, one of the largest of its time, Melissa secured Assurant’s first senior debt rating. She also oversaw the development of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls for taxes and the preparation of 3-years of tax financial statement disclosures for SEC GAAP financial reporting.

Melissa is a Certified Public Accountant and began her career at KPMG in New York and London, where she gained foundational expertise in audit, financial instruments and global business expansion. Her thought leadership has been shared at institutions such as Columbia University and UC Berkeley Law School and her work has been featured in leading publications, including CFO Tech Outlook. Melissa has been named to Treasury and Risk’s list of “Women in Finance.”
