Fabien Cottier

Lecturer, Sustainability Management; Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University

Fabien Cottier is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University, where he is involved in a multidisciplinary NSF-funded project examining the drivers of migration flows in West Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Geneva (2018) and a master's in comparative and international studies from ETH Zürich (2012).

In his research, he studies the causes and consequences of migration and displacement with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, his research investigates how environmental change affects migration pattern, as well as under what condition in-migration results in intergroup conflict.

Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the department of political science at the University of Geneva (2018–2020) and a visiting scholar with the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University (2019–2020). His research has appeared in World Development, Global Environmental Change, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Civil Wars, and Nature Food.
