Dr. Robert Klitzman, Director of Columbia University’s Bioethics M.S. program, writes in CNN about the potential conflicts for doctors who take the Hippocratic Oath after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling.
In the op-ed, “Roe's Reversal Doesn't Just Hurt Women—It Harms Us All,” Dr. Klitzman reflects on his pledge to uphold the highest possible ethical standards in treating patients, and how that will come into conflict now that abortion is banned in certain states.
“We also learn and dedicate ourselves to more recently acknowledged bioethical principles, such as upholding patients’ rights and autonomy, and justice and protection of vulnerable groups,” he writes. “But the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade now forces doctors to grapple with having to violate these principles because of a judicial mandate that most Americans, according to a recent Marist poll, oppose.”
