Attend a Pre-College Preview Course in Philosophy, Art History, Entrepreneurship, or Law

Columbia’s Pre-College Programs for High School Students will offer various ways for prospective students to connect with instructors and preview courses available online and on campus this summer. The Instructor Lecture Series launches in February, and the Student and Instructor Insights Series launches in March.

The Instructor Lecture Series introduces pre-college students to a wide range of topics, including philosophy, law, the arts, communications, and more. Join Jared Peterson on February 26 for “Are Science & Religion Truly Incompatible?” Peterson will ask participants to explore whether there truly is a conflict between science and religion. Such an investigation involves determining what science and religion are, as well as an evaluation of the reasons for and against thinking that science and religion are fundamentally incompatible.

On March 5, Ioana Manolache leads “The Power of the Gaze: Famous Women in Art History.” In celebration of Women's History Month, this talk will focus on the female subjects of exceptional paintings and artworks that changed the course of art history. Along with the "Mona Lisa" smile came Marie-Guillemine Benoist's "Madeline" with her defiant glance, and Jenny Saville's autobiographical unfettered stares. This discussion will explore the psychological, social, and formal implications of famous representations of women in art history in an attempt to provide a glimpse on the complex portrayal of womanhood. Is art able to give power to those on the fringes of society, through representation? How does art contribute to social change? How do we visually deduct the “power” of the subject in a feminist artwork? Don’t miss this exciting preview lecture.

The Student and Instructor Insights Series reunites a student with his or her instructor to discuss courses from the previous summer. The discussions are followed by a brief outline of the application process for the 2022 Summer Immersion Program, as well as a Q&A with the student, instructor, and an admissions officer.

On March 16, the series kicks off with “Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Changing the World via Venture Creation.” Student Anika and her former instructor, “Dr. Jack” McGourty, will discuss a variety of topics including the student experience at Summer Immersion, collaborative work in an entrepreneurial context, and the lasting impact of this course on Anika’s college and career goals. Dr. McGourty is the Director of Community and Global Entrepreneurship at the Columbia Business School and a faculty member teaching courses in entrepreneurship, venture creation, and product innovation.

On March 22, the series continues with “Neuroscience and the Law.” Student Ana and her instructor, Florina Altshiler, who is the lead trial attorney and a partner with the Buffalo, NY office of Russo & Toner LLP, will discuss a variety of topics, including the student experience in the Summer Immersion Program, the intersections of law, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology, and the lasting impact of this course on Ana’s college and career goals.

This summer, Columbia’s Pre-College Programs for High School Students are offering more than 70 courses in a dozen subject areas. Participating students will study alongside a cohort of like-minded students from all over the world, and experience college life while discovering one of the world's great cities. Learn more.
