Seminar on Ethical, Legal and Social Implications of Genetics
Presented by the Center for Research on Ethical/Legal/Social Implications of Psychiatric, Neurologic & Behavioral Genetics, Department of Psychiatry
Race as a Semiotic Field and the Inherent Contradiction in Translational Precision Medicine
By analyzing qualitative data collected from 45 semi-structured face-to-face interviews with clinicians and clinician-scientists engaged in translational precision medicine in cancer treatment and prevention, this presentation addresses two research questions: (1) when and why race is enacted as a proxy for genetics in translational and precision medicine, and (2) what is the inherent contradiction in such practice?
