Strategic Communication Faculty Speaks at the Harlem Children's Zone

On October 21, 2016, Strategic Communication alumnus, global consulting director at Ogilvy, and adjunct faculty member Kai D. Wright spoke on a panel at the Harlem Children’s Zone “Professionals of Color in Media and Entertainment.”

Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies is working with the distinguished nonprofit Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) to offer the expertise of our faculty, staff, students and alumni to promising college students from the Harlem community to increase college and career exposure for HCZ students.

In 2016, HCZ’s symposia were successful in engaging approximately 210 students with 33 professionals in healthcare, business, media, and entertainment. As a result, student interest in these industries has increased, students developed mentorship relationships, and they gained access to internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

Panelists are selected based on a number of criteria: diverse, strong role models, engaging, and willing. This translates to professionals that represent different careers in social media, film/television/music production, digital advertising and marketing, multimedia communications, and more. Professionals who demonstrate a high level of professionalism, and are successful in their careers. Professionals who are able to comfortably address an audience of 30-40 students, 18-24 years old, about their educational and professional experiences. Last, we are looking for professionals who want to volunteer their time in order to inspire the youth of our community.
