Dr. Regina Dolgoarshinnykh, the new interim director of the M.S. in Actuarial Science program, is passionate about elevating the next generation of actuarial science professionals at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS).
Despite having only recently joined the program, Dolgoarshinnykh has experience in actuarial science. With a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and more than two decades of experience at Columbia’s Department of Statistics, she brings a unique blend of academic rigor and real-world application to the program. As a faculty member, she has researched, taught, and consulted within the department, instructing courses in probability, statistics, epidemic modeling, theory of interest, and data science.
In a recent Q&A with SPS, Dolgoarshinnykh shared what excites her about the field of actuarial science—and what makes the Columbia SPS program unique.
What interests you about the field of actuarial science?
Actuarial science combines mathematics, statistics, coding, data science, and problem-solving to address real-world challenges, particularly in managing risk and uncertainty. It isn’t just essential to a variety of industries, from insurance and finance to social systems—it has a direct impact on our society. Analyzing complex data and making informed predictions about future events offers continuous learning essential to decision-making in risk management and financial planning.
What is the value of an M.S. in Actuarial Science degree, and what career advantages do students gain by joining this program?
An M.S. in Actuarial Science provides a strong foundation in mathematical modeling, risk assessment, and financial analysis, preparing students for careers in insurance, consulting, finance, and beyond. The degree not only equips students with technical skills in probability, statistics, and predictive analytics but also enhances their business acumen and communication abilities—both of which are crucial for success in the actuarial profession.
At Columbia, students receive these benefits and more. Access to world-class faculty, research opportunities, and a vast professional network of alumni and industry leaders propel students’ professional development. The program’s strong connections with top employers create unique internship and job placement opportunities, often accelerating career growth. Additionally, the rigorous academic environment challenges students to think critically and innovate, positioning them as top candidates for leadership roles in the actuarial field.
What do you think makes the M.S. in Actuarial Science at Columbia unique?
At Columbia, we care deeply about nurturing our students’ professional development. Our proseminar series, which meet biweekly, bring in leading actuaries as guest speakers, often presidents of professional organizations and CEOs of insurance companies. Students are exposed to the current trends in the industry, and they have valuable opportunities to expand their professional network. Our actuarial science career fair in the fall semester is an especially memorable event, where last year we had representatives from more than 25 companies and many of our students were able to secure summer internships and full-time jobs.
After graduation, graduates remain connected through an active global alumni network that allows them to participate in the program’s life and activities as well as continue to build their professional network.
Beyond the countless unique opportunities for academic and professional growth, Columbia’s curriculum is designed to meet and anticipate the needs and trends of the industry. Our various elective courses allow our students to explore a multitude of tracks within the industry as well as new, developing topics.
What most excites you about your new role as program director?
In this role, I have the opportunity to shape the future of actuarial education at Columbia and help students succeed in a dynamic and evolving industry. I’m eager to develop innovative curricula, foster strong industry connections, and create an environment where students can thrive both academically and professionally. Seeing students progress from the classroom to impactful careers is incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to making a meaningful contribution to their journey.
What resources does the Actuarial Science program provide for students?
The Actuarial Science program not only offers extensive networking opportunities—it empowers students to make the most of these opportunities by providing them with the skills needed to succeed.
Before students arrive on campus, we assist them in preparing their résumés so they are ready for the actuarial science career fair in the fall. During orientation week, we host a full-day workshop focused on interviewing and networking skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to engage with employers.
In the summer, we offer an integrative project for interested students, where they collaborate with industry professionals on real-world challenges, culminating in a tangible deliverable. This experience serves as an in-house internship, providing practical exposure to the field.
