Panel Discusses the Modern Sports Complex

The Master of Science in Construction Administration and Sports Management programs at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies recently cohosted a panel on The Modern Sports Complex: Building with Purpose.

The panel gave a “behind-the-scenes” peek at the dramatic considerations of modern sports complexes, which have evolved from single-purpose venues, to complex, multiuse developments that are intrinsically woven into our urban form and held up as measures for economic development.

From the Olympics, to Yankee Stadium, and the new Tottenham Hotspurs historic dual-sport (Premier League and NFL) stadium, the panelists discussed the fascinating innovations and varied perspectives of owners, city planners, builders, and managers, and introduced the audience to some of the most current thought and practice that is informing the building of modern sports complexes.

Academic Directors Francisco Pineda and Scott Rosner, of the Construction Administration and Sports Management master’s programs, respectively, delivered opening remarks. The discussion featured panelists Mark Levine, NYC Council Member; Partho Dutta, Senior Architect and Principal, Populous; Alex Lasry, SVP, Milwaukee Bucks; and moderator Bill Squires, Lecturer, M.S. in Sports Management program.
