New Career Design Workshop for Visiting Students to Launch This Summer

The Columbia University Summer Session will launch the Career Design Workshop in 2022, a new professional development opportunity that is exclusive to visiting students enrolled in the Summer Program. Students will receive robust and practical career coaching, in addition to choosing from hundreds of courses to build their own academic program of study.

The Career Design Workshop is hosted by the Career Design Lab at the School of Professional Studies, and is facilitated by industry experts, including Steve Safier, Ph.D., Director of Columbia University’s Master of Science in Human Capital Management program. Students will be invited to engage with Columbia faculty and career development professionals to build the materials they need to land their dream job or prepare for the graduate school application process.

"Understanding how to present and describe our capabilities and interests in the best possible way is critical for landing the right job,” says Dr. Safier. Students will work on defining and pinpointing these capabilities and interests, and refining them to create unique portfolios designed to stand out in the application process.

In the workshop, instructors guide students on how to architect a resume or graduate application that attracts attention. Students will learn how to develop a strong, concise personal pitch, both on paper and in conversation. They will also have the opportunity to refine their interview skills and practice different scenarios with career development professionals. A professional headshot booth will provide career-seekers and prospective graduate school applicants with a polished photo to accompany their LinkedIn profiles.

“Being able to land the right job is, of course, so critical for one's career. When we do get the job, growing and demonstrating leadership skills—at every level of our careers—can make the difference for contributing and succeeding,” says Dr. Safier. “I encourage any visiting students studying at Columbia this summer to take advantage of this new workshop. It will be quite a productive summer, full of personal growth and new connections.”

The Visiting Student Program is open to undergraduates and graduates enrolled at another institution, domestic and international. The Visiting Postbaccalaureate Program is open to adults and professionals who hold a bachelor’s degree and who are not currently enrolled at another institution.

Applications are open through April 11, 2022 for Session A, and through May 23, 2022 for Session B. Explore all the options for visiting students this summer. To learn more about the Columbia Summer Session, please join an upcoming information session.
