Michael Strine, accomplished executive in COO and CFO roles across the government, education, health and financial services sector, joined Louis Scenti’s Capstone Seminar Class for a discussion about change management in successful organizations and his views on trends in Human Capital Management.
Michael most recently served as COO and First Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He began his career as a professor at the University of Denver and the University of Colorado-Boulder after having earned his M.A. and Ph.D from Johns Hopkins and his undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware. Prior to joining the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Michael spent time as the CFO for New Castle County before returning to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, to serve as the university’s CFO and Treasurer. Michael left Hopkins to accept a role at the University of Virginia as Executive Vice President and COO.
With a wealth of experience across multiple sectors, Michael shared his thoughts about successful change management implementation and fielded questions from students. He noted four constants that are priorities for HR:
- Recruit, develop and retain the best, highest quality workforce
- Provide investments in systems and data to improve decision making
- Maintain a laserlike focus on DEIA
- Build and align a culture that is healthy for employees
For their class projects and their careers, Michael encouraged the students to think about the changing value proposition for employees and HR professionals and challenged them to think about “How do you balance the amount of needed change with what you hold constant?”
Thank you, Michael, for an excellent and insightful lecture and discussion!
