Mark Your Calendar: Columbia ERM’s Fall 2025 Event Lineup

This fall, the Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program is opening its doors—on campus and virtually—for a semester of thought-provoking events.

Covering everything from how AI is being used in financial risk management to how behavioral science influences decision-making in financial risk management to how key communication skills can advance the careers of risk professionals, the lineup offers students, professionals, and industry leaders an opportunity to connect, learn, and engage with the latest trends in risk. Each event promises not only fresh perspectives but also practical tools for navigating today’s complex risk landscape.

Unless otherwise stated, all events below are in a hybrid format, inviting attendees to join either in person or online.

Author Spotlight: Rich Lauria and John Burkhardt, A Behavioral and Cognitive Approach to Enterprise Risk Management

Authors Rich Lauria, FSA, CFA, and John Burkhardt, Ph.D., will discuss key findings in the field of behavioral economics and its relationship to enterprise risk management. Their textbook, required for the ERM elective Cognitive Bias and ERM, explores the emerging “behavioral” approach to enterprise risk management. The first 30 in-person attendees to sign in at the event will receive a free copy of the book.

Book Launch: Communication Skills for Technical Professionals—A Conversation with Author Sim Segal

Jesse Scinto, Deputy Program Director and Lecturer in Columbia University’s Strategic Communication program, will interview author Sim Segal, Program Director of Columbia University’s Enterprise Risk Management program, on what skills technical professionals need to communicate clearly and influence effectively. The event will feature highlights from Segal’s book, a practical guide on communication skills, written by a technical professional for technical professionals, as well as a book signing and networking reception.

Use of Artificial Intelligence in Financial Risk Management

Navin Sharma, part-time lecturer in the ERM program, will host a panel discussion exploring the increasingly important role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in financial risk management. Featuring a variety of perspectives, this event will assess the applications of AI that are revolutionizing risk management as a field.

About the Program

The Master of Science in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program at Columbia University prepares graduates to inform better risk-reward decisions by providing a complete, robust, and integrated picture of both upside and downside volatility across an entire enterprise. For both the full-time and part-time options, students may take all their courses on Columbia’s New York City campus or choose the synchronous online class experience.
