This spring, Columbia University’s M.S. in Sports Management program will celebrate a milestone of its academic collaboration with FC Bayern Munich, one of the world’s most successful and innovative football clubs. Since 2016, this exclusive collaboration has served as a bridge between elite European sports strategy and Ivy League academic rigor, providing students with unparalleled access to the inner workings of a global sports powerhouse.
The academic collaboration was established with a clear vision: to integrate FC Bayern’s world-class business model into the Columbia curriculum. As the program’s exclusive European club collaborator in the U.S., FC Bayern has provided a “living laboratory” for students to study the complexities of the global sports market.
Over the past 10 years, the collaboration has focused on demystifying the club’s “Mia San Mia” philosophy and translating it into actionable business insights. From digital transformation to international brand expansion, the collaboration has allowed students to move beyond textbooks and engage directly with executives leading FC Bayern’s U.S. and global operations.
The curriculum has drawn directly on FC Bayern’s real-world data and strategic challenges. Students have examined the club’s financial sustainability models and commercial growth in depth, while global executives have come into the classroom to explain how international brand-building works in practice. The program has also traced how Bayern reaches its more than 400 million supporters worldwide, from digital platform strategy to content adapted for different markets.
The hallmark of the academic collaboration has been its commitment to practical execution. Over the last decade, students have participated in exclusive workshops and joint events addressing real industry challenges. This has included developing marketing frameworks for the U.S. market and exploring the intersection of traditional sports values and modern fan-engagement technologies.
The collaboration has not only benefited students but has also provided FC Bayern with access to a world-renowned student body and faculty. This exchange of ideas has been instrumental in the club’s efforts to build a permanent, meaningful footprint in North America, centered on its New York City office.
Celebratory Event: Spring 2026
The 10th-anniversary celebration will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, in Pulitzer Hall’s lecture hall on Columbia’s Morningside campus. The event will gather program alumni, faculty, and FC Bayern representatives to reflect on the achievements and major breakthroughs that have shaped the academic collaboration. It will also look ahead: as the sports world shifts toward a more interconnected, data-driven global economy, Columbia’s students are prepared with the frameworks and practical experience to lead the way.
