Dean Jason Wingard Discusses Continuous Learning and Training

Jason Wingard, Dean of Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, spoke recently with American Management Association Quarterly about his views on continuous professional education and investing in employees.

He says that companies should focus their attention on training individual contributors to shift into managerial roles and managers into executive positions. This will create results and return for the company as well as maintain these employees. Targeting specific audiences is a great place to start, such as focusing on women and minorities:

“You can break a whole company into these micro-groups. Each one of them needs a different form of learning and development, and they need it consistently and continually. [...] There are people who are already in managerial roles who want to break into the C-suite. They need more development on things such as board governance or executive negotiation and persuasion.”
