Columbia Team Embarks on Rights-Based Study of Afflicted Mining Region in Papua New Guinea
This winter, a team led by Joshua Fisher, lecturer in the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution program and director of AC4 at the Earth Institute, Columbia University; Columbia Law School Professor Sarah Knuckey; and Penn State University Professor Tess Russo trekked to a remote mining region in Papua New Guinea to investigate environmental as well as human rights violations in the Enga Province.
Though the negative impact of mining isn’t a new story, the interdisciplinary approach is. Fisher says, “The unique mixed-method approach we are using in Papua New Guinea is an innovative way to work with communities to understand and mitigate the risks associated with heavy metal contamination. It could serve as a prototype for other mining-impacted communities.”
