Bioethics Advisory Board Member to Lead Health Care Ethics at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Kenneth Berkowitz, M.D., FCCP, Advisory Board Member of Columbia University's Bioethics Master of Science program, was named the Interim Executive Director for the National Center for Ethics in Health Care (NCEHC) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The National Center for Ethics in Health Care is the VA's authoritative resource for addressing the complex ethical issues that arise in patient care, health care management, and research. He received the designation on September 1, 2019.  

Dr. Berkowitz is an internist specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He has additional clinical expertise in home care and end-of-life care. His career interest in medical ethics has focused on ethical health care practices, clinical and organizational ethics consultation, and ethics education. He joined the VA in 1983 and NCEHC in 2000 as Chief of Ethics Consultation; in that role, he has focused on clinical and organizational ethics consultation, ethics education, and strengthening ethical practices in VA health care.
