Bela Fishbeyn: Ethical Thought-Leader

How does a philosophy major acquire the credentials to edit a leading bioethics journal? Through a master’s in Bioethics from the School of Professional Studies.

At SPS, Bela:

  • Turned her interest in healthcare into a career
  • Found a program with a focus on global bioethics
  • Won a Fulbright scholarship for research in Russia
  • Joined a lifelong network of passionate professionals
  • Achieved the credentials to qualify for her ideal career

You chose the Bioethics program. What led to that decision?

I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in philosophy and photography. I was first introduced to bioethics as part of my undergraduate philosophy education and loved it. I also got exposure to these issues while working for an attorney who helped healthcare professionals preserve their rights. The master’s program in Bioethics at Columbia was the right fit— and truly pioneering. It was the only program of its kind at an Ivy League school. Of particular interest to me was the focus on global bioethics.

What was the most compelling part of the program for you?

Honestly, it was the incredible networking opportunities. The prestige of the university opens so many doors. It was easy to connect with academics and professionals in my areas of interest. Ultimately this network played a role in helping me win a Fulbright Research Grant.

You did your Fulbright Scholarship in Russia. Tell us about that.

I investigated how Russian physicians’ understanding of addiction might influence the design of health policy. I worked with Dr. Vladimir Mendelevich and Kazan State Medical University.  In fact, this was my thesis work for the program.

Your degree and your research experience led to a position in publishing. What do you do?

I’m currently working as Executive Editor for The American Journal of Bioethics, the leading publication in its field. I couldn’t have hoped for a better job! It’s a privilege to work with new and veteran authors. I’ve been able to interact directly with editor-in-chief David Magnus, an incredible mentor. I’ve learned so much about what goes into a manuscript from start to finish, peer review and the entire editorial and publication process.
