Barry Sommer: Therapists as Small Scale Peacemakers

Barry, a native New Yorker, left the East Coast in 1978 with his wife Donna, to start their West Coast life. In a small, rural community in central California, he began working with children, their families and their communities as an Educational Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist. Over the last 35 years, the scope of his practice expanded to include a key interest in organizational leadership and decision making. “You Can Choose Your Own Life” (Consulting Psychologist Press, 1992) was authored, with Barbara Kerr, to help pre-adolescents establish habits of the mind for creative problem solving, effective communication and healthy decision making.

Therapists are small scale peacemakers, and working with individuals, couples, and families brought a keen interest in more complex systems. Studying with Ron Claassen of The Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies at Fresno Pacific University, Barry began to apply foundational skills in enhancing self-awareness and communication competencies to schools and organizations through coaching, training and as Director of the Collaborative Leadership Institute.

Barry enjoys working with NECR students through their elective course: “Intrapersonal Dynamics and Conflict: Who You Bring to the Table”.  Barry serves the Lindsay Unified Schools as a grant writer and Director of School/Community Development and teaches graduate students seeking their teaching credentials. He has an active private practice focused on children and their families, and a consulting practice in the areas of leadership and organization development. He received his M.Ed. from Queens College in Educational Psychology, and a B.A. in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University.
