Are Selfies Deadlier Than Shark Attacks?
If you believe the articles that have been making the rounds in the news and on social media over the past month, selfies are deadlier than shark attacks. But such claims ignore salient factors of complex issues and mislead the reader by focusing on just one aspect, according to Kaiser Fung, Associate Program Director and faculty for the Master of Science in Applied Analytics program at Columbia. In Statbusters, his column for The Daily Beast coauthored with Columbia statistics professor Andrew Gelman, Fung breaks down the data and discusses how we should interpret the analytics behind such sensational stories.
