Javid Huseynov, Ph.D.

Dr. Javid Huseynov is a scholar-practitioner and educator in applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), with work spanning Natural Language Processing (NLP), knowledge graphs, generative and agentic AI, cloud computing, data storytelling, and the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). His 28-year career spans every era of the field, from neural networks in industrial safety instrumentation to today's generative and agentic AI. At Columbia, he has developed several graduate electives in emerging technologies and AI for the Applied Analytics program, and leads several funded research projects in the same areas.

In industry, he has held science and engineering leadership roles at Amazon, IBM, and Disney, building production AI at scale across retail, enterprise, and media. Earlier, over 13 years at MSA Safety, he designed the first neural network algorithms deployed in industrial flame and gas detection, still in service worldwide. He consults on agentic AI platforms in the construction technology and health and wellness sectors.

Dr. Huseynov holds 22 patents granted across seven inventions in the United States, Canada, the European Union, China, and Australia, and has published peer-reviewed work in journals and conferences including Neural Networks, IJCNN, SPIE, and Springer Lecture Notes. He serves as a topic editor for Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and is a member of AAAI and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.

He received his Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science (2008) from the University of California, Irvine, and Master's degrees in Computer Science (1999) and Industrial Engineering and Management (1998) from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has served as a municipal planning official in California and New Jersey for over a decade, and currently sits on the Montvale, New Jersey Planning Board.
