Timothy Powell

President and Founder, The Knowledge Agency®

Tim Powell is president and founder of The Knowledge Agency®, a management research and consulting firm focused on strategic analytics and knowledge strategy. Much of his current work is in health-related sectors.

Tim’s professional experience bridges corporate intelligence, knowledge management, competitive strategy, information technology, marketing, financial modeling and forecasting, psychology, and public service. “I am especially interested in the value of knowledge and the impact of knowledge on enterprise value and competitiveness - themes that form the core of my consulting practice and that I explore in my blog Competing in the Knowledge Economy."

In addition to many articles, reviews, book chapters, and recurring columns, Tim has authored books on the business applications of technology for competitive advantage. His most recent book, The Knowledge Value Chain® Handbook, has been a required text at Columbia University and describes an ROI framework for enterprise knowledge.

Prior to entering private practice, Tim worked with the firms ORC International, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and KPMG. In a consulting career spanning four decades, he has served over 100 client organizations – among them Abbott Laboratories, Altria, American Express, CIT, General Electric, Highmark BCBS, McGraw Hill, Petrobras, Revlon, Sony, the State of New York, Travelers, the U.S. Navy, John Wiley, and Xerox – as well as smaller and startup firms, where he has held Board responsibilities. Prior to his business career, he worked with public sector and not-for-profit organizations.

Previously to his current role, Tim served as a facilitator for Management and Leadership in the Knowledge Domain. He developed and taught a course Enterprise Intelligence: A Value-Based Approach at the Palmer School of Library of Information Science, and has lectured at NYU, Rensselaer, Rutgers, and Yale.

A Fellow of the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) organization, Tim meets often with business and professional communities worldwide. He loves his work – but when he’s not working, he enjoys writing and playing music, shooting photographs, volunteering and mentoring, and playing with his grandson.

In addition to earning his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees, he also completed additional graduate studies in business at N.Y.U. Stern School of Business and psychology at The New School.
