James D. Marks; Faculty Affiliate

Founder, TheBody.com

In 1995, James D. Marks founded what was to become a world leader in the distribution of HIV/AIDS information, TheBody.com. He sold it to The HealthCentral Network just before the financial crisis of 2008. Before that, Marks practiced securities law in New York City and was a volunteer lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union’s gay and lesbian rights project. While creating TheBody.com, Marks also invented and obtained three patents for systems that present online experts to conduct questions and answers, and for syndication of the experts (or “micro-blogging”) across multiple websites. The patents were sold in March 2012. He continues to hold a patent for online clinical trial recruitment. Marks serves on the board of directors of Family Equality Council. He and his partner, Mark Scott, reside in New York City with their two children.
