Alan Ostfield

Lecturer, Sports Management; CEO, US Sailing

Alan Ostfield is the Chief Executive Officer of US Sailing, the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing. US Sailing provides leadership, integrity and advancement of the sport of sailing in the United States, including supporting sailing organizations and communities, offering training and educational programs and overseeing competitive sailing across the country (including National Championships and the US Sailing Team).

Previously, Mr. Ostfield was the President, North Atlantic | New York & Philadelphia for Live Nation, responsible for Live Nation’s concert business in the New York City and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Prior to joining Live Nation, Mr. Ostfield was President & Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment, which owned and operated multiple professional sports teams and entertainment venues (including NBA’s Detroit Pistons, NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, WNBA’s Detroit Shock, The Palace of Auburn Hills, St. Pete Times Forum and DTE Energy Music Theatre). Prior to joining PS&E and the Pistons, Mr. Ostfield was Senior Vice President & General Counsel of the San Diego Padres and an attorney with Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington, D.C. (whose clients included the Dallas Cowboys).

Mr. Ostfield has combined his experiences in professional sports with higher education, including developing and teaching “Professional Sports Leagues and Franchises” in Columbia University’s Sports Management Masters Program, developing and teaching “Managing a Professional Sports Franchise” in the University of Michigan’s Sports Management Masters Program, teaching “Sports Economics” in New York University’s Sports Business Masters Program and teaching “Sports and the Law” at the University of San Diego School of Law. Mr. Ostfield’s achievements were recognized nationally in 2000, 2001, and 2002 when Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal included Mr. Ostfield on its annual “Forty Under 40” list, culminating in Street & Smith inducting Mr. Ostfield into its Forty Under 40 Hall of Fame in 2002.

Mr. Ostfield is actively involved in many board and community activities. He is currently a member of the National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors. Mr. Ostfield’s past community activities have included serving on the United States Tennis Association Board of Directors, the Wharton Sports Business Initiative Alumni Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of the Sport Management Advisory Board at the University of Michigan, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego.

Mr. Ostfield earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania prior to attending Boston University, where he received his Juris Doctor degree (Magna Cum Laude) from its School of Law and a Master of Business Administration degree from its Graduate School of Management.

Mr. Ostfield was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He, his wife Jennifer and their son Benjamin and daughter Hannah live in Sleepy Hollow, New York.
