Sustaining Peace 2016: A New Vision of Women, Peace, and Security

Sustaining Peace: A New Vision of Women, Peace and Security is the fourth annual interdisciplinary event on sustainable peace held at Columbia University.

This year’s event, Women, Peace, and Security focuses on the crucial roles that women have in peacebuilding and security. Across the world, women play key roles in peace processes and resilience at local, national and international levels. At the same time, women are exposed to gender-specific risks in terms of physical, environmental, political and economic security.

The event will feature a keynote address by Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, and a panel of renowned scholars and thought leaders from the fields of global health, human rights, and security. Together, these thought leaders and activists will explore the unique contributions that women bring to peace and security, discuss the challenges that women face in those processes, and envision opportunities to magnify their impact and legitimacy in the world.

The conference is organized with support from the Columbia University Master’s Program in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, the Morton Deutsch International Center on Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Columbia’s Teachers College, and the 2015-2016 Fellows of the Earth Institute’s Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict and Complexity (AC4).
