Punishment and Repair: Justice Innovations in Global Perspective

This panel brings together four expert practitioners whose institutions all navigate the border between punishment and repair: Elizabeth Evenson, International Justice Director at Human Rights Watch; Aude Le Goff, Head of Programme - Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court; Justice Ana Maria Mondragón Duque, Auxiliary Judge at Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace; and Meg Reiss, formerly Chief Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan and now at Columbia’s Center for Justice. Operating at international, national, and municipal levels, the institutions these recognized professionals represent face similar questions about how to promote accountability while also encouraging rehabilitation and repair for people who cause harm, victims, survivors, and affected communities. The discussion will look at how each of these professionals navigate the tensions between punitive and restorative justice in their respective contexts and, crucially, what these institutions can learn from one another.
