Presented by the Columbia University School of Professional Studies Community Programs and Office of Government and Community Affairs

Columbia Bundles Community Scholar Chris Lawrence works to find practical ways to support seniors in order to offer them more flourishing, resilient and hopeful living through persistent advocacy on their behalf and a person-focused approach to deep listening and companionship. He will lead a discussion of current and potential inter-generational work to address and meet the demands of an increasingly large aging population. A group of distinguished practitioners and educators will explore a natural way that older people and younger people can share life.

Speakers:

Chris Lawrence, Columbia University Bundles Community Scholar and Community Chaplain with InnerCHANGE East Harlem

John Robertson, Special Lecturer in Social Work, Columbia University

Dr. Mark Nathanson, geriatric psychiatrist Columbia University Irving Medical Center

Daniel David, NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and National Palliative Care Center

Janna Heyman, Professor and Endowed Chair of the Henry C. Ravazzin Center on Aging and Intergenerational Studies at Fordham University

Janicia Hyde, Vista on 5th

Stephen Cheung, Pastor, Trinity Heights Church

Chris Lawrence is originally from the UK and now makes his home in East Harlem with his wife Naomi and their four children. He has spent most of his career doing community organizing and inner-city church-related ministry in London. After pastoring at the United Church of Christ in East Harlem for five years, Chris and Naomi transitioned to InnerCHANGE, working alongside neighbors in low-wealth neighborhoods. They now devote themselves to advocacy for seniors in low-income housing in the neighborhoods around them. Chris also works for Job Path NYC, supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and is pursuing a doctor of ministry at Drew University.

The Columbia University Bundles Community Scholars Program, administered by the School of Professional Studies and the Office of Government and Community Affairs, enables independent scholars to pursue their lifelong learning aspirations, whether it be completing an independent project or attaining skills in a particular area. The program helps to foster and deepen ties between the University and the many independent members of the cultural and intellectual community surrounding it. The program was named in honor of longtime University Trustee A’Lelia Bundles in 2020.
