Growing Together with the Community: Minority, Women, and Local participation at Columbia University

Columbia University has a long-standing commitment to working with minority, women-owned and locally based (MWL) businesses. In addition, a diverse and local workforce benefits both Columbia and its surrounding community by offering different perspectives, greater awareness, and increased economic opportunities.

In this seminar, participants can learn about why Columbia is so committed to engaging MWL vendors and contractors and promoting careers for MWL employees, as well as the history of the university's program to increase diversity opportunities. The seminar also explores the university's diversity goals and objectives and provides insight into the types of companies the university seeks to engage.

About the Guest Speaker

Tanya Pope, AVP, Supplier Diversity and Business Integration, works to provide capacity building and strategic support to minority, women and locally-owned businesses on behalf of Columbia University. Prior to returning to Columbia earlier this year, Tanya served as National Expansion Senior Manager for Interise, a national non-profit that provides capacity building education to small businesses in 64 locations across the country. She was Executive Director, Education and Corporate Programs at the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS), one of Columbia's MWL Construction Trades Certificate Mentorship Program partners. Prior to SBS, Tanya founded and operated a consulting firm. The Pope Group, which developed business process strategies and corporate travel programs for media companies and small businesses. She was also Vice President of Travel Technology and Operations for MTV Networks/Viacom for over a decade. She has received numerous awards and honors for her work in small business development.
