American Language Program (ALP) 2024 Winter Conference
The American Language Program (ALP) Winter Conference is a professional development event for practicing language educators, researchers, and graduate and doctoral students aimed at enriching their pedagogical practice in teaching. Although the presentations are primarily focused on English as a second language (ESL/TESOL/ELT) education in academic settings, educators teaching other languages or in other educational contexts may find them relevant and applicable to their teaching.
The title and theme of the 2024 conference is Language Learning & Technology: Innovations/Implications.
Please see this year's agenda here!
Previous conferences have focused on:
- assessment for learning (2023)
- learning and teaching grammar (2022)
- professional development (2021)
- curricula and materials (2020)
- teaching learners how to learn (2019)
- vocabulary acquisition (2018)
- pronunciation pedagogy (2017)

The conference will begin with a plenary address by Larissa Goulart, a Montclair State University assistant professor of linguistics. Goulart has been engaged in the field of linguistics since her early teaching days in Brazil and at Northern Arizona University, where she taught English writing classes. Her expertise extends to corpus linguistics, particularly in analyzing the linguistic characteristics of undergraduate student writing. Her research interests focus on the practical applications of corpus linguistics in educational settings, offering new insights into language learning and teaching. Her departmental work includes leveraging corpus linguistics tools for pedagogical material development, providing a bridge between linguistic research and classroom application. Also active in the academic community, Goulart brings a unique perspective to the field of linguistics, aiming to empower teachers and improve language education through data-driven approaches.
The conference runs from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch is included with admission. A detailed schedule of presentations will be posted here in February 2024.
