10th Annual Deutsch Awards for Social Justice

Morton Deutsch, one of the world’s preeminent psychologists, has made significant contributions over the many years of his career in the areas of conflict resolution and social justice.

The Morton Deutsch Awards are designed to recognize innovative scholarship and practice in the area of social justice.

Please join us in honoring Abigail Disney, filmmaker, activist, philanthropist, and the 2014 Morton Deutsch Scholar-Practitioner Award Recipient for Distinguished Contributions to Social Justice.

Wine and hors d'oeuvres reception to follow.

Abigail Disney was educated at Yale (B.A.), Stanford (M.A.), and Columbia (Ph.D. in English Lit.). In 1991 with her husband, Pierre Hauser, she founded the Daphne Foundation, which has provided millions of dollars in support to grassroots, community-based organizations addressing the causes and consequences of poverty across New York City.

Her work on women’s leadership led her to Liberia in 2006, where she began her filmmaking career with her partner, Gini Reticker. Since 2008, their company, Fork Films, has produced dozens of documentaries, most notably Women, War and Peace, an award-winning, five-part special series for PBS, and Pray the Devil Back to Hell, a widely-acclaimed documentary which brought 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee to the attention of the world.

In 2008, she launched Peace is Loud to support the voices of peace-builders and to promote the building of an "army of everyday peace-builders" across the United States. In 2009, Peace is Loud organized a Global Peace tour as part of the UN International Day of Peace and in 2010 led a 10-day project to build "female peace-building capacity" in three cities across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Peace is Loud also supports peace activists through Speak Peace, which acts as a speakers' bureau to raise the profiles of peace activists from around the world.
