Speaker; Science Writer, The New York Times

John Schwartz is a science writer for the New York Times. His beat focuses on climate change.

Before taking on this environmental beat, he covered topics that included the space program, law and infrastructure. He has covered the destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans' flood protection as well as other disasters, with assignments that have taken him from the Mojave Desert to Moscow.     

Hi work also shows up occasionally in The Times Book Review, Science Times, arts and culture sections, and he writes a humor column for the business section’s mutual funds quarterly.

Prior to working at The Times, he worked for The Washington Post and Newsweek. John is author of “Oddly Normal,” a memoir, and "This Is the Year I Put My Financial Life in Order," a money memoir and guide.

John was born in Galveston, Texas, and attended the University of Texas at Austin and UT law school. He is married to his college sweetheart, Jeanne Mixon; they met the week before classes started at UT in 1975. They have three children and two grandchildren.
