Scott Rosner, Professor and Academic Director of Columbia’s Sports Management program, was recently featured in an article in SportBusiness on the viability of using arenas and stadiums as mass COVID-19 vaccine distribution centers. Rosner and his colleagues discuss how stadiums used for this purpose is mutually beneficial for the facilities, as well as the communities they are located in. By utilizing these large spaces that are well-suited to containing masses of people, arenas and stadiums can show they’re committed to helping their communities, and the people of those communities can be served in places that are largely funded by their taxes. Although there are some questions about who would pay for the staffing and facilities in an arena or stadium during vaccine distribution, Rosner and his colleagues believe it wouldn’t be difficult to keep costs low.
