Engaging Business Leaders in Diversity Learning Strategy

Jennifer Brown speaks to Sara Daly-Padron's class in Human Capital Management

In September, Sara Daly-Padron's Organizational Strategy & Learning class was joined by award-winning author and DEI thought leader Jennifer Brown for a discussion on how to engage business leaders in diversity learning strategy. Jennifer's work in talent management, human capital, and intersectional theory has redefined the boundaries of talent potential and company culture. Jen highlighted keys to aligning learning with strategy and spoke about key skills for success as HR Strategists. Lessons learned include:

  1. Leadership alignment is key for alignment of learning & strategy. Know who are your sponsors and who is accountable.
  2. Intent isn’t the same as impact. For true change management, you must define metrics that matter and measure progress.
  3. Allyship is an important tool, however it is earned not self-proclaimed. We can all aspire to be allies, but only our impact earns us the badge.
  4. HR strategists must develop business expertise, deep partnerships with stakeholders and business leaders, and have (at least) a baseline knowledge of DEI.
