A book published last year by Dr. Robert Klitzman, M.D., Academic Director of the M.S. in Bioethics program, was back in the spotlight this week thanks to a laudatory book review and an episode of a podcast from Parents magazine.
The UK-based site BioNews published a review of Designing Babies: How Technology is Changing the Ways We Create Children that praised the book for providing “fascinating insight into the American fertility field today” by including “real-life experiences from both patients and medical providers” that make it “both accessible and relatable.”
After contrasting the fertility sector in the UK with the more business-driven, less regulated American sector described in Designing Babies, the review concludes that Dr. Klitzman “has created an incredibly detailed, thought-provoking book which shines a light on the dilemmas that fertility patients and medical practitioners face on a daily basis.”
Meanwhile, the We Are Family podcast recently released an episode entitled “Let’s Get Real About IVF and Surrogacy” that features Dr. Klitzman’s comments about assisted reproductive technologies (ART) alongside personal accounts of surrogacy and in vitro fertilization from Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and media executive Catherine Levene.
“More than 20 percent of the U.S. population is having infertility problems,” Dr. Klitzman notes. “So a lot of people would like to get pregnant or have children, but need some medical intervention.”
