Analyzing the E.U. in the Balkans

Akri Çipa, ’19SPS, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, is a researcher and foreign policy consultant in Tirana, Albania. He recently published an article in Reporting Democracy on the EU’s political activity in the Western Balkans.

Çipa questions if the EU's plan to replicate its own freedom of movement in the Balkans can actually transform the region.

"Does 'mini Schengen' herald a new dawn of cooperation or is it merely political theatre? While the initiative could fizzle in the cold light of reality, success is not out of the question — assuming plenty of good will, a few changes to the current plan and the support of EU partners," he writes.
