Vinay Venkatraman: Qualifying for a Global Job Market

At SPS Vinay...

  • Discovered synergies between computers and construction
  • Developed a strong background in green building
  • Learned environmental safety practices
  • Studied cost-effective methods for sustainability
  • Acquired the skills and the network to…

You were already working in construction, in India and Dubai. What made you want to return to school?

I always wanted to focus my career on project management. Reading about this program online, I realized it would give me a solid background in green building. It would also position me to pursue a career in the USA or Asia by helping me develop a strong foundation. I come from India, where the construction industry is young by international standards. However, the country is among the world leaders in the computer field. There is a huge potential to improve efficiency by integrating the two industries. Since the volumes are high, serving a large population, the benefits multiply many-fold.

Why Columbia?

Columbia is one of the world’s most prestigious universities and positions me well globally. I feel that the curriculum looks toward the future of the industry. As I mentioned, I am interested in green building. My studies showed me that by integrating concepts of sustainability with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) we can be both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The program gave me the confidence to manage any project by applying what I’ve learned.

Was the SPS program valuable in terms of networking?

Absolutely. It connects you to the industry, and gives you a feel for what hiring managers are expecting. During networking events, I had the chance to make contacts, get valuable advice, and find out about career and personal growth opportunities. This is a brilliant curriculum. Columbia truly brings out the best in its students.
