Sustainability Management Class Visits the New York Times

On 10/12, Claudia Dreifus brought her Sustainability Management students to the offices of the New York Times. They were guests of Opinion Editor Kathleen Kingsbury and Science and Health Opinion Editor Alexandra Sifferlin.

Kingsbury and Sifferlin conferred with the students for an hour and a half about issues in opinion journalism and how they choose guest essays to publish.

In her course, "Writing Op-Eds, Small Personal Essays, and Blog Posts," Dreifus teaches scientists and sustainability professionals the basics of journalism so that they can communicate their work with maximum effectiveness. Over the semester, students gain practice in writing op-ed opinion pieces, producing interviews, making podcasts, and writing for the internet. At the end of the term, they are guided in writing and researching complex long form feature articles such as those regularly seen in the New York Times MagazineScientific American, and Quanta.
