Not Sure How to Move Your Class Online? Ask This SPS Student

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing schools around the world to close campuses and quickly pivot to distance learning formats, Matthea Marquart, ’21SPS Bioethics, recently offered advice for educators who may be new to online education.

In an article entitled “Need to move your class online in a hurry? Here's how,” published in the Star Tribune, Marquart shared tips and resources drawn from her experience as the Director of Administration for the Online Campus at the Columbia School of Social Work. Co-written with her Columbia colleague Johanna Creswell Báez and Laurel N. Bidwell of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn., the article stresses the importance of a clear audio transmission and suggests that educators practice screen-sharing for presenting course material in advance.

Marquart and her co-authors also urges educators to prioritize online engagement, community, and access to resources, noting that “[m]any students (even fully online students) still rely upon public or university-based resources and spaces to engage in their education.”

The article offers links to a number of articles and resources for effective online education.
