Earth Day Campus Spotlight: The Build It Green Club

1. Tell us a little bit about Build It Green.

Build It Green is a student club focused on sustainability in the built environment. We strive to encourage individuals in our program and other groups on campus to understand how impactful sustainability can be not only in our field but in all industries. The goal is to encourage sustainability practices through the power of inclusion and collaboration.

2. How does your club operate?

As a club that focuses on the built environment, we center our attention on the connection between physical space and its social consequences, from urban spaces to human-made spaces in rural areas. We spotlight organizations such as The Edible Schoolyard Project, which brings seed-to-table education to New York City schools. We also research ideas like carbon farming solutions surrounding permaculture and urban agriculture.

3. What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from your work?

The built environment touches all aspects of life, so it has a huge impact on everything from our health to our lifestyles and behaviors. Given the amount of time spent indoors, it has a profound impact on our wellbeing. Furthermore, vulnerable and disadvantaged populations are disproportionately affected by climate change. We need to work across all sectors in order to mitigate climate change and improve public health.
