Journey Powell

M.S. in Strategic Communication

Columbia HBCU Fellow 2026 | Spelman College

Journey Powell is a 2026 HBCU Fellow at Columbia University, where she is pursuing her M.S. in Strategic Communication. A Spelman College alumna who graduated a year early with honors, Journey is a creative and editorial professional whose work blends communication strategy with fashion, archival research, and narrative worldbuilding.

She creates conceptual narratives shaped by interiority, cultural memory, and visual storytelling, expressed through image-making, writing, research, and art direction. Her practice includes directing her debut three‑scene fashion exhibition Flowers Shall Grow in Rain, producing editorial work rooted in surrealism and Black women’s interior experiences, and contributing to cultural storytelling and archival research at True Star Media and Black Girls in Archives Fashion.

Journey is building a career at the intersection of creative direction and strategic communication, with aspirations to pioneer her own fashion‑philosophy publication and lead brand storytelling that is emotionally intelligent, culturally grounded, and visually resonant.
