Klitzman: Compensations for Egg Donors Raise Risks of Eugenics
In a letter to the New York Times, director of the M.S. in Bioethics program Robert Klitzman examined the ethical questions behind compensations for egg donors.
The letter is in response to an article about a lawsuit that challenges caps on egg prices, arguing that caps are unfair to donors. Klitzman explains that, however, there are other “crucial issues” — he argues that guidelines on egg prices “aim partly to reduce risks of eugenics.” He notes that “egg prices already rise with donors' SAT scores,” and that with no guidelines, they “will surely escalate for eggs from donors without certain mutations (for example, breast cancer).”
