BCHM G4021 General Biochemistry. 3 points.

Primarily for students in departments other than biochemistry. Prerequisite: general and organic chemistry. An integration, from a dynamic point of view, of cellular constituents with the chemical processes of living systems: chemistry and function, mode of synthesis and degradation by the cell, the characterization and role of particular enzymes and coenzymes in these reactions, and the mechanisms of oxidation and energy production. Nucleic acids, replication, and the genetic code are also discussed. (Given at the Morningside campus.)

BCHM G4024 Structure and Function of Nucleic Acids. 4 points.

Not offered during 2017-18 academic year.

Prerequisite: organic chemistry.  The structure, dynamics, catalytic reactivity and biological function of DNA, RNA, and their derivatives

BCHM G4026 Biochemistry of Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis. 3 points.

Prerequisites: a basic course in biochemistry or biology, or instructor’s permission.
Structure and organization of chromatin, nucleic acid hybridization, and sequence complexity of DNA, DNA and RNA sequencing methods, current views of replication and repair, transcription and translation, regulation of nucleic acid and protein syntheses, recombinant DNA techniques, gene transfer and gene duplication.  Discussion of original papers and evaluation of experimental procedures and conclusions.  Lectures preceded by an hour-long optional conference. (Given at the Morningside Campus.)

BCHM G4250 Molecular Biophysics. 4.5 points.

Prerequisites: basic physical and organic chemistry.

Methods and principles involved in studying the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, membranes and their macromolecular assemblies. Tertiary and quaternary structure of proteins and nucleic acids; forces that determine biological structure and function; spectroscopy of biological macromolecular; random motions and diffusion; hydrodynamics; forces and fluxes across membrane; diffraction; macromolecules.

BCHM G6045 Membrane Receptors and Transport Proteins. 3 points.

Prerequisites:  Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Eukaryotes I (G6300X); Molecular Biophysics (G4250).  Molecular structure and function of membrane proteins; general principles and common threads.

BCHM G6100 Stem Cells & Cell Lineage Specification. 3 points.

Not offered during 2017-18 academic year.

Prerequisites: A basic course in molecular biology or permission of the instructor.

The lecture series will comprise general lectures, analyses and discussion of primary literature on stem cell and lineage biology as well as student seminars. The themes to be presented include basic cell and molecular biological charachterization of stem cells, regulation of self-replication versus lineage restriction and differentiation of cells, model systems used in studies of stem cells, and the relevance of tissue formation, regeneration and disease states.

BCHM G6270 Nmr Spectroscopy of Macromolecules. 4 points.

Prerequisites: instructor's permission or Biophysical Chemistry G4170.

Theoretical principles and applications of NMR spectroscopy for the study of biological macromolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates, in solution.

BCHM G6275 Diffraction Analysis of Macromolecules. 4.5 points.

Prerequisites: Biophysical Chemistry G4170 or the instructors' permission.

Diffraction theory and applications to protein, nucleic acid, and membrane structures.  Topics include electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, protein crystallography, electron and neutron diffraction and electron microscopy.
