Matthew Smith: How the Executive Technology Management Program Changed My Life

I have been overwhelmed and amazed with the industry recognition and respect that come from earning an Executive Master of Science in Technology Management degree from Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies.

Exemplary program staff and faculty, and a relevant and challenging curriculum, have given me outstanding leadership skills with an executive presence and prepared me to increase shareholder wealth and navigate digital transformation with precision.

Within a month of beginning the program, my visibility and responsibilities significantly increased for my role as the lead enterprise architect for AT&T’s Technology Development’s Scaled Agile & Digital Transformation. I was able to immediately apply both strategic and tactical skills I learned in the program.

I was blessed with an amazing mentor, David Widup. He was the “game-changer and difference-maker” for my learning experience who pushed me to think and act as an executive. He prepared me to weave together technical, process, financial, political, and bureaucratic aspects that executives face daily. Essentially, he taught me to own the space that occupies the intersection where business and technology meet. For me, this was priceless.

Since I successfully completed the program in December 2017, I resigned from my position at AT&T to pursue new opportunities that more closely align with (and allow me to fully concentrate on) my field of study—digital transformation. For the first time in my 23-year career in technology, companies and interested parties have been pursuing me.

Recently, I accepted a position with a leading global consulting firm as Senior Business and Integration Architect. For this much-coveted enterprise architect role, I work with Fortune 100 companies to lead their respective digital transformations. It’s an amazing opportunity that fits like a glove, aligning with my studies and career trajectory. The role comes with an enormous upside: career growth opportunities and a significant increase in pay of nearly 35%.

Over the last couple months, I hear from colleagues and connections often. They connect with me to get my advice and recommendations. I have increased my social circle significantly. I receive three to five bona fide requests per week from interested parties and organizations with future offers.

My life has significantly changed, thanks to Dr. Art Langer and the Executive Master of Science in Technology Management program.
