Columbia Adds Online Option to Enterprise Risk Management Master’s Program

The School of Professional Studies at Columbia University has developed a fully online option for its Master of Science in Enterprise Risk Management program. First available for students starting the program in fall 2019 or later, the online option features the same renowned curriculum, courses, and faculty as the School’s on-campus program.

The new option “allows us to include faculty from anywhere across the country, bringing in an even broader wealth of talent and experiences,” says Sim Segal, Academic Director. He added that the online option is especially beneficial to students “either outside the New York area or who have less flexibility to commute onto campus.”

The School of Professional Studies offers the online option through its distance-learning platform, which not only facilitates interactive lectures and discussions, but hosts group projects, assignments, and immediate instructor feedback.

For investor and venture capitalist Ricardo Taveras (’18SPS, Enterprise Risk Management), studying ERM online at Columbia was “the best online learning experience I’ve ever had.” Taveras, who entered the master’s program with the goal of helping startups grapple with uncertainty, says that his online coursework afforded “constant interactivity and faster, more transparent grading.” Students and faculty formed a strong community on the platform, and “by the end of the course, everyone involved built a lasting, close relationship,” he says.

To accommodate working professionals, most courses in the online master’s option will be offered at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. EDT, and students can complete the program at their preferred pace: full-time (in as little time as 12 months) or part-time (in as much time as 3 years).

The application for the fall 2019 online master’s option is scheduled to open on September 15, 2018.
