Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity risk is a new reality.

Cybersecurity has become a critical issue for companies worldwide. In the U.S. alone, more than 209,000 cybersecurity jobs are unfilled, and postings are up 74 percent over the past five years, according to a 2015 analysis by Stanford University’s Peninsula Press.

The Cybersecurity area of focus will give you an in-depth understanding of this field, including how to discuss cybersecurity issues with your board, C-level executives, and other constituents; implement effective global cyber-risk management strategy and initiatives; manage third-party vendors, customers, and others affected by cyber-risk; and make informed decisions about handling crises when systems are compromised.

This area of focus will help you:

  • Master the establishment of firm-wide evolving cybersecurity cultures across business lines
  • Examine business model relationships to security architecture
  • Investigate recent newsworthy cases to devise strong countermeasures against possible threats
  • Plan for and manage cybersecurity issues, incidents, and practices

Where this degree can take you:

  • CISO or other relevant C-level positions
  • Leadership positions in cybersecurity
  • Team management in cybersecurity

World-Class Guidance

Only at Columbia can you get these three benefits: an area of focus, the intellectual rigor and depth of our curriculum, and the guidance of world-class mentors.

Along with core courses shared by other areas in the program, you’ll follow the Cybersecurity focus, taking elective courses that delve deeply into the issues of technology management from that perspective.

Designated Electives

These electives inform the Master’s Project, where you apply your coursework to a real-world business challenge, objective, or scenario. The goal is a technology solution—usually a product or service.

The project pairs you with a mentor from our exclusive network of CIOs and technology executives. You’ll work closely with your mentor for three semesters, shaping your idea into a project plan that will become a professional asset.

Executive Seminars

At the C-level, technology is the tool and transformation the vision. Over the course of this program, you’ll develop and refine your Master’s Project solution in three stages:

Master’s Project Stages

1
Product or service
realization
2
Strategic planning
and marketing
3
Operations
management

The online Executive Seminars center on trends and issues specific to high-level technology management. After each seminar, your mentor will review the progress of your Master’s Project and provide feedback.

Residencies

The residency component is an essential part of your development as an executive. You can choose the Cybersecurity area of focus with either the New York City or Europe residency plan.
