Tom Sahagian
Lecturer, Sustainability Management
Tom Sahagian has more than 40 years of experience in multifamily, commercial and institutional energy efficiency. He has performed hundreds of energy audits, designed heating and cogeneration systems and developed several energy data acquisition systems. Most recently he created and managed the conversion of a 10-unit building on Manhattan's Upper West Side from oilfired central steam heat to individual multi-split heat pumps in each apartment. This project, which is ongoing, has yielded substantial data that will be used to help guide future decision-making about electrification in NYC and elsewhere. In collaboration with two other authors, he developed and wrote the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Climate Mitigation Roadmap, the Housing Authority’s plan to meet NYC’s stringent Local Law 97 through energy efficiency and beneficial electrification. He now plays a major role in the development and performance testing of NYCHA’s window-based cold-climate heat pump and battery-powered stove initiatives. Mr. Sahagian writes and speaks widely about energy efficiency and was a member of former mayor Bloomberg’s Green Codes Task Force.
