- Immediately after receiving your letter of admission, complete the Application for Visa Certificate. See Visa Requirements below
Should you be accepted for admission, you will receive detailed instructions on the following steps in your letter of admission. Because each step needs action on your part, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the process now so you can fulfill the requirements in a timely fashion.
- Submit all required official documents.
- Activate your UNI.
Your University Network ID (UNI) is automatically assigned from the date of your acceptance. Please allow five business days for your UNI to be created before you attempt to activate it.
- Submit your immunization documentation.
Students must provide the Columbia Health Immunization Compliance Office with documentation of their decision on meningococcal meningitis vaccination and documentation of their immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).
- Register for classes.
Students must submit immunization documentation to obtain permission to register for classes.
You are strongly encouraged to submit your application as early as possible to ensure it is reviewed before the program has reached capacity.
Notifications will be delivered through the online application system.

Application decisions are delivered on a rolling basis. Decision notifications are delivered through the online application system within 2-3 weeks of the submission of a complete application or within 2-3 weeks of the submission of any required documents not included with the online application.

Domestic Transcripts From institutions in the U.S. or Canada
If your transcripts are from an institution in the U.S. or Canada, we strongly recommend submitting unofficial documents through the online application system at the time of application. Each transcript must contain the name of the institution, student name, a list of courses taken, grades or marks earned, and name of degree earned. Please note that documents showing completion of a curriculum or summary of courses are not sufficient.
Candidates offered admission will later be required to supply official documents prior to enrollment for verification before the offer is considered official.
For those applicants who are offered admission, official transcripts must arrive in envelopes sealed by the issuing institutions certifying conferral of a bachelor’s degree. Copies, opened or unsealed envelopes, unofficial printouts, or facsimiles will not be accepted. If your institution has a process for emailing electronic transcripts (such as services available through eSCRIP-SAFE, Parchment, or National Student Clearinghouse), the registrar’s office may submit it/them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Many schools take a number of weeks to fulfill transcript requests; please plan accordingly. All transcripts submitted are considered property of the School of Professional Studies. They will not be returned to you, transferred, or forwarded to other institutions or other schools at Columbia University. Please do not submit an original copy of an academic transcript that cannot be replaced.
The admissions committee reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is a discrepancy between the self-reported transcript and the official transcript.
International Transcripts From institutions outside the U.S. or Canada
If your post-secondary credentials are from an institution outside the U.S. or Canada, the Office of Enrollment Management requires you to submit all post-secondary credentials (undergraduate and graduate) to World Education Services, Inc. (WES), a third-party verification agency for a course-by-course evaluation.
Instructions for using WES
WES must complete a course-by-course evaluation of all post-secondary credentials. Please select the WES basic course-by-course evaluation (with GPA and course-levels) and request to have WES send your evaluation to Columbia University School of Professional Studies. The school can be found by searching Columbia University and then selecting School of Professional Studies. The evaluation provided to the School of Professional Studies becomes an official academic record and sole property of the School of Professional Studies upon its receipt.
WES evaluations will be reviewed by the School of Professional Studies administrators and the determination of degree equivalency to U.S. degrees is at the discretion of the School of Professional Studies.
Statement of academic purpose (500 to 750 words)
The statement of academic purpose should address your purpose and interest in pursuing the program, how the program fits into your overall academic and/or professional goals, focusing in particular on the connection between the program and your academic and/or professional experience.
Some applicants use their statements as an opportunity to amplify information contained on the application or academic transcripts. The statement provides an excellent forum for explaining any weaknesses that may appear on the transcript or to highlight any strengths that may not be evident elsewhere.
If your intentions include graduate school preparation, please indicate the graduate program(s) to which you intend to apply, cite the specific courses you plan to take, and discuss how that course plan will prepare you for admission to the program(s).
Three letters of recommendation that attest to your readiness for intensive study of the ancient languages. At least two letters should come from former instructors of an ancient language or other qualified individuals.

English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting official scores from one of the tests listed below. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit unofficial documents through the online application system at the time of application. Candidates offered admission will be required to send official scores directly from the test provider prior to enrollment; these scores will be verified before the admission offer is considered official. Applicants receiving scores below the posted minimums may be advised to consider the American Language Program.

This requirement is only waived if:
The applicant has completed all coursework for and earned their undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in a country where English is the sole official language. Please note that graduate level work does not exempt applicants from meeting this requirement.
The applicant has completed at least two years at an undergraduate U.S. institution or at an institution in a country where the sole official language is English and earned the undergraduate (or bachelor's) degree at that institution.

International students are responsible for ensuring they have read and understand the University’s student visa application eligibility and requirements. Please note that it is not permissible to enroll while in B-1/B-2 status. In addition, if studying on a student visa, you must enroll full-time (12 credits per term) and study on campus.
Eligible international students who wish to apply for an F-1 visa should do so immediately after they have received their letter of admission to the School of Professional Studies by contacting the International Students and Scholars Office at Columbia (below) at least three months before the first day of class. Students will then be sent information about obtaining an F-1 visa. Once in the United States in F-1 status, students must register for at least 12 points of credit-bearing courses, during the registration period, and remain so registered throughout the course of the session. If a student neglects to do this, or if a student falls below the 12-point minimum during the course of a session, the student will be reported in violation of F-1 regulations to the United States Department of Homeland Security.
Visitors to the United States in B-1, B-2, WB or WT status are not allowed to enroll in classes at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies.
International students who require a student (F-1) visa to study at Columbia are required to pay an International Services fee.
