Julia Brickell advises and consults on issues associated with compliance, information governance, data security, artificial intelligence, general business law, and litigation. In her legal career, Ms. Brickell has served both as in-house counsel and courtroom litigator. She was executive managing director and general counsel of H5 from 2008 to 2021, when the company was acquired. H5 used search and measurement expertise and technology to address e-discovery, data management, and compliance challenges. Before she joined H5, Ms. Brickell was associate general counsel of Altria Client Services, addressing product liability and future litigation challenges. This followed her 1998-2000 tenure as vice president and deputy general counsel of Philip Morris USA. Before moving in-house, Ms. Brickell litigated at Davis, Polk & Wardwell in New York, defending commercial, antitrust, securities, and audit malpractice cases.
Ms. Brickell has been on the faculty of the Executive Master of Science in Technology Management at Columbia since 2007, teaching Technology and the Law. A frequent speaker and writer on topics at the intersection of data security, artificial intelligence, and legal ethics, she has also taught trial practice courses at the New York County Lawyers Association.
Ms. Brickell serves on the board of the AI Education Project, which fosters awareness of and provides and promotes education on artificial intelligence. For many years, she served on the board of Lawyers for Civil Justice.
Ms. Brickell is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law and Smith College.
