Summer Career Design Workshop Series: Interviewing Skills for Career Growth

The second event in the Columbia University Summer Session Career Design Workshop Series, Interviewing Skills for Career Growth, is facilitated by Steve Safier, Ph.D., Lecturer in the Discipline of Human Capital Management.

The four-part series provides visiting students with resources and strategies for successfully navigating the job market, including using design thinking to devise one’s career plan; distinguishing oneself during job interviews; and creating a strong personal brand. Dr. Safier, who directs the Human Capital Management M.S. program at the School of Professional Studies, shares detailed tactics for job interviews before, during, and after.

Helpful tips include developing a concise, one- to two-minute introduction that shares information about the candidate’s

  • related degree(s);
  • background and skills that match the job description;
  • and why the candidate wants this particular job at this company.

Before the scheduled interview, job seekers should take time to prepare a short list of their strengths and weaknesses. Dr. Safier advises that speaking confidently and clearly about one’s strengths and weaknesses may highlight the application over others; it could demonstrate self-awareness and a willingness to grow. However, it is imperative that candidates can flip their weaknesses into opportunities for improvement and eventually strengths. Lastly, candidates should always prepare questions for the employer and send a thank-you note after the interview has concluded.

The series returns in July, starting with an encore of the Career Design Workshop on July 12. The second installation led by Steve Safier, Ph.D., Interviewing Skills for Career Growth, takes place on July 14. Students will have the opportunity to get new professional LinkedIn headshots taken on August 3. The next day, August 4, Louise A. Rosen will lead Build Your Personal Brand. Rosen is the Senior Associate Dean of Administration and Communications at the School of Professional Studies and a Lecturer in Environmental Policy at the School of International and Public Affairs.
